Maps as Decoration?

Humans have long had an urge to travel. It is how we became one of the only species to spread to all parts of the earth. Every civilisation has at some point sought out new lands, whether this was for trade, or other less honourable reasons.

Synonymous with travel is, of course, navigation. And with navigation comes maps. People have been as obsessed with maps almost as long as they have travel. In fact, a cartophile is a person who have a strong interest in maps.

However, recently there has been a slightly different use for maps. Rather than navigation, maps are being used for decoration in the home.

Now that GPS is a part of modern society the need for physical maps has lessened and lessened, but our desire for them has stayed. To replace their function in the past people are now starting to use them in the home to appreciate their beauty in different ways.

So how exactly would you use maps in your home?

There are a few ways in which maps can be put to use. The most obvious is to simply put a map on the wall, framed or hung up it is a simple decoration to have and can add a touch of depth to any room.

However, there are larger alternatives available. Statement walls are becoming increasingly popular. For those unaware, a statement wall is where in stark contrast to plainly painted walls around it, this single wall has a strongly patterned wallpaper or colour scheme. Basically, the perfect place to hang some map wall paper.

However, this map wall paper is simply a repeating pattern, with a bit of savvy why not blow a map of your home town up to cover the entire wall?

Or, and this is our personal favourite here at Clear View, the old classic of a globe bar sat regally in the corner.
